Afforestation and reforestation are often used synonymously. However, they describe very different forms of forestry practices. Reforestation is the process of planting trees on land that recently had tree cover. It is common for reforestation to occur after forest fires and deforestation. Whereas, afforestation is when new trees are planted or seeds are sown in an area where there has not been any tree cover.

Les termes “boisement” et “reboisement” sont souvent utilisés comme synonymes. Cependant, ils décrivent des formes très différentes de pratiques forestières. Le reboisement est le processus qui consiste à planter des arbres sur un terrain qui avait récemment une couverture arborée. Il est fréquent que le reboisement intervienne après des incendies de forêt et la déforestation. Le boisement, quant à lui, consiste à planter de nouveaux arbres ou à semer des graines dans une zone où il n’y avait pas de couvert végétal.
